Helping the Secretary of Entires at the Vernon Fair

Submitted by: Sue Law Willey

Time Period: 1940s

In the weeks before the opening of the Vernon Fair; my grandmother, Ruth Law “secretary of entries,” would be very busy.

A catalog with an entry form enclosed would be sent to previous entrants. That catalog listed all the departments and classes within them that could be entered in Floral Hall. My sister Diane and I would help by preparing the tags for the items (baked goods, flowers, needle and art work) to name a few.

Gramma had a cone of string and we’d cut a piece and fasten it onto the top of the tag.

When entry sheets were returned to her, she would fill out the tags in her very distinctive hand writing. The same info would be written twice, the bottom half of the tag would go to the entrant so they could claim their goods when the fair was over and the top half would be tied onto the item being entered.

One thing I remember very well was when a lady came to Gramma’s house with a large suitcase full of crocheted work. She probably had an item to match every class listed in that department. We helped her tie the tags on her entries.
