Vernon Mills
A major Vernon business for more than a century. The mill operation was begun by Abram Van Epps, a grant that was part of his original land patent. It was noted as one of the earliest, largest grist mills in all of Oneida County. It was sold to James Baker, Joel. H. Hills, and James. J. Bartholomew.
Vernon Mini Fair
The Vernon Mini Fair ran from 1976 through 2005 at the Vernon Downs Racetrack. The event, in late September each year, included arts and crafts booths, agricultural and baking awards, entertainment, a car show and a kids fun run around the oval.
Vernon Post Office
The Vernon Post Office has been in multiple locations along Seneca St since it began, before moving to its currently location in the 1960s. One previous location, pictured, is now part of the Circle K gas station parking lot.
Vernon Public Library
The Vernon Public Library has existed, at several locations, for nearly 100 years.
Vernon Station of West Shore Railroad and Oneida Railway Co.
Passenger station serving the West Shore RR in the 1800s and 1900s, plus the Oneida Railway electrified interurban service in the early 1900s.
Vernon Union Free School
in 1875, the various Vernon Village district schools (5,7,10) and the Vernon Academy joined into one public school system. It took over the stone Vernon Academy building. An annex was added in 1898, a wood framed portion was added in 1912. It became a high school in 1901. The building was replaced between 1914-1916, with the frame portion moved up the street to become a two family house.
Vernon United Methodist Church
The first building was a red brick schoolhouse in 1832 on Mill St. A new site was purchased in 1841, and a church was built there in 1848. The current building was dedicated March 2, 1893. Between 1946 and 1948, the kitchen and sunday school rooms were expanded, the latter used for several years for primary school classes.
Volunteer Fire Company of Vernon Inc.
Began in 1825. The department was organized in 1833, and consisted of 17 members. In 1840, they built an engine house. And in 1872, they purchased another engine to supplement the 1825 equipment. In 1946, the current organization was incorporated.
