Details
From Rome Sentinel, 9/19/2017:
The business previously included Dana Pohl’s great-grandfather, Valentine Pohl; grandfather Foster Pohl; and father Chester Pohl. It began when Valentine Pohl began selling feed part-time while operating a dairy farm after moving to the area around 1900.
Foster Pohl continued the personal farm/feed sales combination, and was helped by Chester Pohl before Chester left for military service during World War II.
Around that time, Foster Pohl focused on the feed business and built the store at its verona Road site in 1945.
Chester Pohl returned home helped with the business until buying it in 1964. Dana Pohl said he began helping at the business as a child and took over in 1983 after college.
The store has survived floods in 1955 and 2013, while developing a business whose customers have included some multi-generation farms as well.
The business had 10 employees, and offered a wide selection of animal and pet feeds, garden supplies, animal health supplies, and tools, says its website. It also carries a selection of seed for grass, corn and soybean for the lawn, garden or farm. It had commercial contracts with Vernon Downs and the Utica Zoo.
