Details
The Vernon Train Station remains remarkably intact from its days serving as a stop on the West Store Railway, and for decades as a stop on the interurban Oneida Railway electric service.
From about 1907 to 1930, an electrified “third rail” service operated commuter trains between Syracuse and Utica, traveling up to 55 mph.
After competing for decades with the New York Central and Hudson Railroad, the West Shore became a subsidiary. The New York Central eventually became CSX, operating until the [1980s], but passenger service here ended in the [1960s]. After its railroad days, the train station was part of Pohl’s Agway.
